It has been a while since I have put up any posts. It’s been a busy summer, but I have been able to get some projects done. There is one new video out on the YouTube channel, and I hope to put together a post about that, but that’s not what this post is.
My daughter has needed a new desk for a while, and I told her that I would make one for her. She didn’t really want to wait for me to build one, but she couldn’t find one anywhere that she liked. So, reluctantly, she agreed to let me build her a desk. 😂
She searched the internet for ideas, and meshed a few concepts together. She wanted an “X” on the side and an open back. She wanted 3 drawers in the cabinet and a single drawer in the front. She chose the pulls for the side drawers, and opted to have the front drawer without one. She also wanted the bottom of the cabinet to have a little character, so I made a basic design with a couple curves.

Together, she and I came up with this design. And of course, as I built it, I checked with her along the way to get her opinion. I’m pretty sure I checked more than she wanted, but I’m overly cautions that way. Especially since it’s a pretty basic desk.
It was nice to have her in the shop with me while I gave her the options. But it was even better to have her with me to help stain. She wanted a darker look. And although she said she wanted it painted darker, I convinced her to let me stain it with an espresso stain instead of paint.
I’m pretty particular about the way I apply finish, so I did that on my own. But after it was completed, I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. I think there are a couple things I would do differently, such as give myself a little more room around the drawer fronts. I also bought a new dado stack for the last drawer that I built (the front drawer) that I should’ve bought a long time ago. My previous dado stack required a lot of clean-up and the new one made it much quicker. But live and learn.
Like I said, I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. And my daughter is also. I hope this is a desk that she can use for many years and can take with her when she moves out (which will be way too soon, I’m sure).
